TikTok LIVE Gifts Explained: Coins, Diamonds and What Creators Actually Earn

TikTok LIVE gifts work in three steps. Viewers buy Coins with real money, spend Coins on Gifts during your stream, and TikTok converts the Gifts you receive into Diamonds. You then withdraw Diamonds as cash. TikTok sets both conversion rates itself and does not publish a fixed Diamond-to-dollar value, so any exact "per gift" payout you read online is an estimate.

How do TikTok LIVE gifts work?

The gifting system has three currencies, and only one of them belongs to you.

  • Coins are bought by viewers inside the app. They cannot be exchanged back for cash.
  • Gifts are the animated items (roses, lions, galaxies and so on) that viewers buy with Coins and send during a LIVE or on some videos.
  • Diamonds are what the creator receives. Nobody can buy Diamonds directly; they only come from Gifts you receive.

TikTok's Virtual Items Policy spells this out: Diamonds are based on the Gifts a creator receives, "at a rate of conversion to be determined by us." The same policy says TikTok can change the Coin-to-Gift exchange rate at any time, that Gift purchases are final, and that Coins expire if the viewer's account is terminated.

For a streamer, this means the value of a gift is set in two places you do not control: the price a viewer pays for Coins (which differs by country, payment method and app store) and the rate TikTok uses to turn Gifts into Diamonds. Treat gifts as tips with a platform-set exchange rate, not as a fixed-price product.

TikTok sets both the Coin price and the Gift-to-Diamond rate, so a gift's cash value is never fixed.

How much is a TikTok gift worth to the creator?

People search this more than anything else about TikTok LIVE money, and TikTok does not publish it. There is no official table saying "a Rose pays the creator X cents" or "one Diamond equals Y dollars."

You will find third-party sites quoting a flat revenue split or a fixed cents-per-Diamond figure. Those numbers come from creators comparing their own withdrawals, and they are not confirmed on TikTok's help center or legal pages. They also shift over time, because Coin prices vary by region and platform fees (Apple and Google take their own cut of in-app purchases) sit between the viewer's payment and your balance.

What you can rely on:

  • The Coin cost of each Gift is shown in the gift panel, so you can see which gifts are larger relative to each other.
  • Your Diamond balance and its current cash equivalent are shown in the LIVE rewards section of the app before you withdraw.
  • TikTok sets the conversion and can change it, per the Virtual Items Policy.

In practice: stream for a few weeks, then compare Diamonds received against the cash value TikTok shows you. That gives you your real rate for your region. Plan your income from that number, not from a viral screenshot.

TikTok LIVE eligibility: who can go LIVE and receive gifts?

TikTok's LIVE monetization requirements page lists the baseline for earning from LIVE:

RequirementWhat TikTok states
AgeAt least 18 (19 in South Korea)
Account standingGood standing, following Community Guidelines
RegionMonetization features are only available in selected countries and regions
LIVE accessYou must be eligible to go LIVE and have LIVE Gifts access before you can collect Diamonds
Account typeSome accounts (for example government and political accounts) may be excluded from some features

The Virtual Items Policy also states you must be 18 or older to buy or send Gifts and to earn or withdraw Diamonds.

A note on follower counts: many guides state a specific follower minimum to go LIVE. TikTok's official monetization page does not list a single number, and access can differ by region and account. Check the LIVE option in your own app (tap +, then swipe to LIVE). If it is not there, the app is telling you that you are not eligible yet.

Repeated policy violations can remove monetization access. A clean account matters more than a big one.

What is TikTok LIVE Subscription?

LIVE Subscription is TikTok's recurring-payment feature, closer to a Twitch sub than a one-off gift. Viewers pay monthly and get perks such as subscriber badges, custom emotes or stickers in chat, and subscriber-only content.

TikTok opened Subscription beyond LIVE-only creators in September 2024. According to the TikTok newsroom announcement, eligible creators must be 18 or older, have an account in good standing, and have at least 10K followers plus 100K video views in the past calendar month, or meet the separate LIVE eligibility requirements.

TikTok has not published a fixed creator revenue share for Subscription in that announcement, so check the terms shown in your own Subscription setup screen before you set a price.

Gifts spike during events and battles, then drop. Subscriptions are predictable. If you already understand how Twitch subscription revenue share works, the logic is the same: fewer, steadier payments beat occasional big nights when you are planning a budget.

How do you withdraw TikTok diamonds?

Diamonds are converted to cash and paid out through a linked payout method. The Virtual Items Policy names PayPal and other third-party payment accounts as options, and the methods available to you depend on your country.

The general flow in the app:

  1. Open your profile, tap the menu, then go to the rewards or balance section for LIVE.
  2. Check your Diamond balance and the cash value shown.
  3. Link a payout method if you have not already (you may need identity verification).
  4. Request the withdrawal.

Some points from the policy that creators often miss:

  • TikTok does not guarantee a payout arrives within a specific time.
  • If a viewer's gift purchase is later refunded, TikTok can ask you to return the matching payment.
  • TikTok can end or change the Diamond program, with limited compensation rights.

Minimum withdrawal amounts and daily or weekly limits are shown in-app and can vary by region, so do not plan around a number you read elsewhere. Payment provider fees and currency conversion fees also apply.

Gift income is taxable in most countries. If TikTok is becoming a real revenue line, read our guide on LLC, taxes and bookkeeping for streamers.

TikTok LIVE vs Twitch and YouTube for tips

TikTok gifts, Twitch Bits and YouTube Super Chats solve the same problem: letting viewers tip in the moment. The difference is transparency.

Twitch and YouTube publish their rates, which makes forecasting easier. TikTok's advantage is discovery: the For You feed can push a LIVE to people who have never seen you, which is rare on Twitch. Many streamers use TikTok to find new viewers and another platform to keep them. Our where to stream in 2026 comparison goes through the trade-offs.

How to earn more from TikTok LIVE gifts

Gift income depends on attention during the stream, not on follower count alone. What tends to help:

  • Go LIVE on a schedule. Followers get notified, and regulars are the ones who gift.
  • Thank every gifter by name. Viewers gift to be seen. A quick thank-you, on-screen alert, or reaction keeps it social rather than transactional.
  • Set gift goals. A visible target ("100 roses and I play the viewer pick") gives people a reason to chip in.
  • Be careful with LIVE battles and co-hosting. They can drive gifting, but constant battles wear out an audience.
  • Post short clips of your LIVE. Clips pull new people into the next stream. Our guide to turning short-form video into affiliate sales covers the same funnel for links.
  • Stay within the rules. Begging for gifts, misleading promises or giveaways tied to gifting can break TikTok's LIVE guidelines and cost you access.

Do not rely on gifts alone. Affiliate links, sponsorships and merch are not tied to a platform exchange rate. Our best affiliate programs for streamers list is a good starting point for a second income line.

FAQ

Does TikTok take 50% of LIVE gifts?

TikTok does not publish an official split. The 50% figure is a common estimate from creators, not a number stated in TikTok's policies. TikTok states that Diamonds are calculated at a conversion rate it determines.

Can you go LIVE on TikTok under 18?

Rules vary, but you must be 18 or older to receive Gifts, earn Diamonds or withdraw money, per TikTok's Virtual Items Policy (19 in South Korea for monetization).

Can I buy Diamonds?

No. Diamonds only come from Gifts you receive. Viewers buy Coins, not Diamonds.

Why can't I see the LIVE button?

Your account is not currently eligible, usually because of age, region, account standing or follower count. TikTok checks eligibility per account, so there is no single fix beyond meeting the requirements.

How long does a TikTok withdrawal take?

It depends on your payout method and region. TikTok's policy says it does not guarantee a specific processing time.

Are TikTok LIVE Subscriptions better than gifts?

They are more predictable. Gifts pay more on big nights, while Subscriptions give you a recurring base. Most LIVE creators who earn steadily use both.
